Akron Marathon predicts runaway success

Road Runner Akron Marathon organizers have been pleasantly surprised by a 87% increase in runner registration this year despite concerns about a reduced turnout due to poor economy.

With such a drastic increase in registration, race officials have been required to put a participant cap in place. Both the half marathon and the relay have been capped at 3,000 and 5,000 respectively. Organizers are expecting both races to have the maximum number of runners.

The Akron Marathon includes a full marathon, as well as a half marathon and a five-person team relay. The event, quickly becoming a part of Akron’s cultural landscape, kicks off September 26th.

As in previous years, the race is expected to be well organized, include an abundance of good sportsmanship, and be an exciting challenge. Participation will benefit not only the runners, but also their communities. The marathon promotes health and fitness while supporting local and national charities.

The event begins at 7 am on September 26th in the heart of downtown Akron. The marathon consists of a 26.2 mile race, the half marathon will be 13.1 miles, and the five-person relay splits 26.2 miles among the five racers.

The marathon is organized by the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation. More information including registration directions can be found at www.akronmarathon.org.
